Jaagte Raho

Hi Old Souls out there,

I am a woman of the 21st century with a soul which absolutely loves old things. My blog is dedicated to all the forgotten memoirs, be it movies, music, people,  places,  things.  This is my passion to collect innumerable memories in my heart and soul. In a way,  I am putting my heart and soul into this blog.

Hope you enjoy reading!

Today I feel like writing about a movie which my father had shown me when I was in my teen years.  While I am writing,  I am literally reliving that moment.  I love watching old movies,  by old I don't mean 90's movies. I am a 90's kid btw. This movie dates back to 1956 and it's black and white. Till date,  whichever movies I have seen,  this movie is the best classic I have had the opportunity to watch. Jaagte Raho (Stay Awake) is the movie name and the protagonist of this movie is our very own showman of Bollywood, Raj Kapoor.

The movie revolves around a very simple theme but each and every character in the movie has layers to their personality.

The theme is very simple,  Raj Kapoor is the poor man who is jobless,  homeless, has come to the city in search of job. After wandering for a long time,  he starts feeling thirsty.  To quench his thirst,  he enters a residential building. Some ruckus takes place and the residents label him as a thief and start chasing him in the middle of the night. He runs from one home to another to hide. While he hides in each apartment, he witnesses some shady business happening in the building. Every respectable person residing in the building  has a stain on his/ her character.

The whole night is filled with Raj Kapoor running amok for his life and discovering the ugly side of human nature.

Raj Kapoor's acting is flawless,  he is funny in some scenes and you just cannot help feel sorry for him throughout the movie.

What I especially love about this movie is the ending. While running from apartment to apartment,  the poor man reaches a flat,  where he finds a child awake in the wee hours. The child tries to pacify him.  He confronts beseechingly that he just wants to drink a glass of water. Why are people so quick to label him as a thief?  The kid innocently says,  you say you have not done anything, you are innocent, then why are you afraid,  why are you running here and there and why is your body language full of fear and anxiety. Go outside,  hold your head high with confidence,  no one will bother you.

He takes the kid's advise, walks out of the building
confidently. To his surprise, no one notices him. They are busy searching the thief.

This scene is epic. One of the most beautiful tracks,  "Jagoo Mohan Pyare"  plays in the background. Once he is out of the building, he sees Nargis drawing water from a well, he pleads to her for some water and finally his thirst is quenched.

If you love watching old movies,  this movie is a treat to the eyes with a flawless storyline and impeccable performances. You must watch if you haven't already. The music is melodious too.  We all know the brotherly bond between Raj Kapoor and Mukesh, hence song of Mukesh was a mandate in  RK productions. The song he sung is also full of deep meaning. It goes like,  'Zindagi khwab hai, khwab mai jhoot kya aur bhala sach hai kya". But funny thing is the song was not picturized on Raj. Another beautiful rendition by Salil Choudhary is the punjabi song 'Teji Main Jhuth Boliya'.

Please watch the movie and share your thoughts on it. Hope you love it too!
